Number 10. Free water is provided by restaurants

There is no point in drinking water directly from the tap anywhere in the Philippines, but most restaurants offer free filtered “service” water. Before buying bottled water, ask for a glass

Number 9.  The English language is widely spoken

You should always brush up on a few local words before you visit a foreign country, rather than expecting the people to speak the same language as you. I found most locals spoke English well! When people from other countries speak multiple languages and I only understand one, I always feel guilty. In the Philippines, 52 million people speak English, making it the fifth largest English-speaking nation after the U.S., India, Pakistan, and the U.K.

Number 8. Change in your pocket

Smaller provinces or islands with cheap public transportation and sari-sari stores (small convenience stores selling items per piece instead of in packs) will benefit from this. A tricycle driver is unlikely to have change for a thousand peso bill, or even a 500, so always carry at least a fifty.

Number 7. Engage with the local Filipinos who are friendly and hospitable.

Visitors are welcomed with open arms, and they enjoy seeing travellers enjoy their country. Don’t be afraid to ask a local or speak to them. They enjoy helping others. Also, this is the best way to see each city from a different perspective. Immerse yourself in the Filipino culture by going where the locals go and what they enjoy.

Number 6. Provinces differ from one another

It would be the biggest mistake to assume that all of the islands in the Philippines are the same. Filipinos are historically regionalism due to geography. The Philippines’ nationalistic movements didn’t begin until the 19th century. Despite this, provinces are still distinct in their dialects and foods. Make sure to explore as many facets of the Philippines as possible while you’re there since it’s a hugely diverse country that’s worth exploring.

Number 5. The use of drugs is strictly prohibited

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has taken a very hard-line stance on drugs. As part of the “Philippine drug war”, the president has encouraged citizens to kill suspected criminals and drug addicts. His campaign has resulted in thousands of deaths. A sniper recently killed a controversial mayor in June of 2018 who paraded suspects in the streets. If you were planning on purchasing drugs during your trip to the Philippines, don’t do it.

Number 4. Taking a tricycle ride 

A tricycle is essentially a motorbike sidecar. The way they are used varies depending on where you are, but they are common in smaller towns. In the Philippines, you are sure to ride in one at least once.

Number 3. It’s all about food, food, food

Food is a passion for Filipinos. Normally, Filipinos eat five meals a day – three big ones (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and two small ones (merienda or light snacks in between big meals). Don’t forget to bring your appetite. Having the full Filipino experience will require an openness to trying new things, from boiled developing chick embryos to a sizzling plate of chopped-up pig’s face. You shouldn’t be surprised if a Filipino greets you with “have you eaten yet?”

Number 2.  Filipinos are incredibly polite

Filipinos are so friendly and polite, especially in places that aren’t overrun by tourists. Most people will address you as “ma’am” or “sir”. Perhaps even “ma’am sir”. Respect them by using the terms when addressing them as well.

Number 1.  The local currency is the ‘Philippine Peso’

It makes your trip feel even more exotic if you’re anything like me! $1AUD is roughly equal to 30₱. In other words, that $5AUD cup of coffee would cost you around 160 cents₱.
